A Harvard Business Review study has revealed the extent of phone addiction, with people being interrupted by their phones every 13 minutes of their waking time. As a response to this increasing reliance on smartphones, digital detox clubs are emerging globally, promoting a break from technology to boost mood and reconnect with nature.
Some individuals are taking this idea further by opting to switch to ‘dumbphones’, basic devices that offer only calling and texting features. August Lamm, a former art influencer, has been a proponent of this movement, giving up her smartphone and documenting her journey in an illustrated guide.
Lamm’s transition to a dumbphone lifestyle wasn’t instantaneous, but she emphasizes the positive impact it has had on her mental well-being. Though initially challenging, she found ways to overcome logistical obstacles without a smartphone, advocating for engaging in face-to-face interactions and rediscovering the joy of being present.
While acknowledging the limitations of not having internet access, Lamm remains steadfast in her belief that ditching a smartphone can lead to stronger relationships and deeper creative fulfillment. She encourages artists to focus on real-world connections and creative development rather than solely relying on social media for validation and success. In the future, Lamm plans to take her experiment a step further by giving up her laptop, demonstrating that a rich and fulfilling life is possible without constant digital connection.
