Laws regarding golf carts in South Carolina

South Carolina officials are reminding residents to follow safety rules when taking their golf carts for a spin as temperatures warm up. The Department of Public Safety emphasized that just because a golf cart is ‘street legal’ doesn’t mean anyone can drive it on any street at any time. To ensure safety, golf cart owners must follow a checklist provided by SCDPS. This checklist includes having insurance, permits, and registration with SCDMV, staying within 4 miles of the registered address, driving on roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less, operating during daylight hours, and having a driver who is at least 16 years old with a valid driver’s license. Failure to adhere to these rules can result in fines or penalties. For more information on South Carolina’s golf cart laws, residents can visit the SCDPS website. Stay safe and enjoy cruising in your golf cart this season!
