Since Wednesday, more than 100 people have tragically died in India and Nepal due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued warnings for multiple weather hazards, including heat waves in the west and thunderstorms in the eastern and central regions. The monsoon season has not officially started yet, but the unexpected heavy rain has already caused devastation.
In Bihar, at least 82 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents over the last two days, while Uttar Pradesh has reported 18 deaths due to lightning and storm-related incidents. In Nepal, eight people have died from lightning strikes and heavy rain.
The weather office is predicting more rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over central and eastern India until Monday. In recent years, intense heat waves in the summer months have also been a major cause of concern and have led to multiple fatalities.
The IMD had previously forecasted a much hotter April with above-normal temperatures across most of India, indicating that the extreme weather patterns are becoming more frequent and severe. The authorities are urging people to take precautions and stay safe during these unpredictable weather conditions.
