South Carolina readies for its second execution by firing squad

South Carolina is set to execute inmate Mikal Mahdi on Friday through a firing squad, marking the second time this method has been used in the state in the past five weeks. Mahdi was sentenced to death 20 years ago for killing an off-duty police officer. The firing squad is seen as a quick and humane way to carry out executions due to challenges in obtaining lethal injection drugs. In the execution process, Mahdi will be strapped into a chair with a bull’s-eye target over his heart before being shot by rifles from 15 feet away. Mahdi’s final appeal was rejected by the South Carolina Supreme Court this week.

Mahdi’s case has shed light on a busy time in South Carolina’s death chamber, where executions had been paused for 13 years before resuming in 2021. The state now has 28 inmates on death row, with Mahdi being the fifth inmate to be executed since September. The state’s use of the firing squad and keeping execution procedures secret has drawn criticism from some quarters.
