Struggling to Break the Scroll Habit? Learn How to Train Your Brain to Prioritize Movement

Clinical psychologist Diana Hill and movement specialist Katy Bowman have collaborated to write a book titled “I Know I Should Exercise But … 44 Reasons We Don’t Move and How to Get Over Them.” The book discusses how scrolling through phones, especially during times of stress or fatigue, can lead to more sedentary time and worsen negative moods. Instead of turning to social media for a quick dopamine release, the authors suggest retraining the brain to seek physical activity for stress relief and mood boost.

The book introduces the concept of psychological flexibility, derived from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as a way to build a habit of choosing movement over phone use. The authors provide six practical strategies to encourage physical activity, including “surfing” the urge to scroll, savoring favorite activities, adding novelty to familiar movements, and turning worry into compassionate action by taking concrete steps to address issues that matter. By combining movement with nature, individuals can find a balance between staying informed and engaging in physical activity. Through these strategies, individuals can overcome barriers to exercise and improve overall well-being.
