Elephants at San Diego Safari Park Come Together to Shield Calves During Earthquake

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck San Diego, causing a herd of elephants at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to spring into action to protect their young calves. Video footage shows the older elephants encircling and shielding the 7-year-old calves from any potential threats as the ground shook. The quake was felt as far as Los Angeles, but caused no injuries or major damage. Elephants, being highly intelligent and social animals, gathered in an alert circle to assess the danger, with the young calves in the center and the adults facing outward. One calf sought refuge among the adults, while the other, a male named Zuli, showed his courage and independence. Female elephant Khosi, who helped raise Zuli, reassured him by patting him with her trunk. As the calves grow, their roles within the herd will change. The elephants huddled briefly again during an aftershock, demonstrating their protective instincts towards their young. The behavior of the elephants was praised by Mindy Albright, a curator at the park, who emphasized the importance of protecting children. The video of the elephants’ response to the earthquake showcased their strong familial bonds and instinctual behavior in the face of danger.
