South Carolina athletic department finishes 2023 with financial surplus for first time in four years

The University of South Carolina athletic department finished the fiscal year ending in June 2023 with a surplus of $69,238, marking the first positive result since 2019. The department reported total operational revenue of nearly $160.5 million and expenses of a little over $160.4 million for the year. Key revenue sources included media rights, contributions, ticket sales, royalties, and conference distribution. Major expenses involved support staff, coaching salaries, and athlete-student aid, among others.

In terms of revenue generation, ticket sales for men’s teams totaled $22.3 million, with football being the top earner at $19 million. On the women’s side, ticket sales totaled $1.47 million with women’s basketball leading at $1.35 million under coach Dawn Staley.

Having fielded nine men’s teams and 12 women’s teams in the Southeastern Conference, South Carolina’s financial performance placed it sixth among the SEC schools that have submitted their financial reports to the NCAA. Despite previous deficits in recent years, the department’s fiscal health improved in 2023, reflecting a positive trend for the university’s athletic programs.

When the school closed its financial books for 2023, the surplus marked a key milestone for the University of South Carolina athletic department, showing progress in its financial management and operations.
