Clay Higgins Criticizes Haitian Immigrants and Tells Them to Leave the Country

Rep. Clay Higgins of Louisiana sparked controversy with a now-deleted social media post calling Haiti the “nastiest country in the western hemisphere.” The post came after a nonprofit from Haiti filed charges against former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance for baseless claims about migrants in Springfield, Ohio. Higgins amplified the debunked claim that Haitians were eating pets, leading to bomb threats in the area. Subodh Chandra, representing the Haitian Bridge Alliance, called the post a clear threat. Rep. Steve Horsford moved to censure Higgins on the House floor for inciting hate, but Majority Leader Steve Scalise objected and the motion was found to be out of order. The majority of Haitians in Springfield have temporary protected status and are in the country legally. Trump and Vance have promised to revoke this protection and deport them if elected. Higgins, a strong Trump supporter, has a history of using heated rhetoric, including calling for the killing of suspected Islamic terrorists and physically removing an activist from an event on Capitol Hill. The post has drawn criticism, with calls for an Ethics Committee investigation and censure or expulsion, but Higgins’ fellow Republicans have largely defended him.
