South Carolina Attorney General Wilson provides clarification on position regarding Section 504 lawsuit

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson recently attended a Dorchester County Republican Party meeting where he expressed his support for Section 504 accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Wilson emphasized that he fully supports the accommodations provided by Section 504 and has no intention of eliminating them. He clarified that his focus is on challenging the portion of the act that considers gender dysphoria a disability.

In response to President Joe Biden’s executive order that added “gender identity disorders” into the law, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Jan. 20 to remove it. South Carolina then joined a 17-state lawsuit challenging this executive order, with the Attorney General’s Office’s sole intention being to restore Section 504 to its original intent without the inclusion of “gender identity disorders.”

Wilson assured attendees at the meeting that he is committed to ensuring that individuals with disabilities continue to receive the necessary accommodations under Section 504. His involvement in the lawsuit is focused on upholding the original intent of the law while addressing concerns about gender dysphoria.
