Judge affirms decision to release ‘Slender Man’ attacker from mental health facility

Judge Michael Bohren denied a motion to block the release of Morgan Geyser, who, as a 12-year-old in 2014, conspired to stab a classmate to please the fictional horror character “Slender Man.” Geyser has spent seven years at a mental health facility and was cleared for release earlier this year. Medical experts testified that she was no longer a threat to the public, prompting the judge to rule in favor of continuing her release into a group home with substantial supervision. Bohren stated that Geyser showed progress and did not believe there was a reason to stop the conditional release process. The motion to block her release focused on Geyser’s reading of a book with dark themes and contact with a man who was said to be “sexually aroused” by her crime, but the judge found no evidence that she encouraged his behavior. Geyser pleaded guilty to attempted homicide in 2017 and was sentenced to a mental hospital. Anissa Weier, her accomplice, was also sentenced to a mental hospital but was released in 2021 after four years. A hearing is scheduled for March 21 to review Geyser’s conditional release plan.
